Praise for EMPOWERED!

Sheryl Ellinwood boldly covers two crucial healthcare topics—personal responsibility and prevention. These topics are under the rubric of breast cancer, but the book also provides guidance for any disease state, for the maintenance of health in general, and for the prevention of disease. As such, Empowered is a must-read!
PETER BOELENS, MD, MPH

An excellent resource for women and their physicians. A practical, well-written discussion of important research that every woman should be made aware of ! I recommend it highly.
CELESTE HUGHES, N.D., H.H.P
DOCTOR OF NATUROPATHY
HOLISTIC HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONER

I wholeheartedly endorse Empowered as a thorough and well-written book. It includes a wealth of information on how to prevent breast cancer, including ways to strengthen the immune system—a strengthening that would, of course, prevent more than just breast cancer. The book’s advice to guide women with breast cancer through treatment, with an appropriate emphasis on getting a second opinion, is excellent.

About the Author

Sheryl is that rare combination of artist and businesswoman. She spent twelve years working in the health insurance field before deciding to change careers. She earned her BFA degree from the University of Toledo (Ohio) in 1991 and her MFA degree from the University of Southern Illinois (Carbondale) in 1994. She was awarded a graduate fellowship in 1993.

In 1994 she founded her business, ellinwood studios, inc. That business began with glassblowing and evolved into the creation of jewelry and home décor that is sold in shops and galleries across the country. Another aspect of Sheryl’s business is creating large commissioned glass wall pieces for major adult and children’s hospitals.

Sheryl’s personal artistic work takes the form of mixed-media sculptures influenced by science, philosophy, nature, and various religious belief systems. Her sculptures are in many galleries and in corporate, public, and private collections. She is both an avid reader and traveler. Her most recent travels include trips to South Africa, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Sheryl’s research into cancer and its treatments and prevention began more than a year before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. When someone close to her was diagnosed with melanoma, she immediately began researching the disease and less toxic, more effective treatments than those offered under the current standard of care. When she herself was diagnosed with cancer, she continued her research, focusing on breast cancer.

Sheryl’s breast cancer diagnosis inspired her not only to write this book, but also to create a breast cancer bracelet, the Pink emPOWER bracelet (bracelet information available on bracelet page).

Sheryl practices yoga and is passionate about health, good food, and cooking. Sheryl and her husband, Jerome (Jerry) Keller, live and work together in rural Iowa. Together they tend a large, organic garden. They presently have three cats, Smooch, Goober, and Cancer Kitty, all rescued strays.
